Beyond Style: When Movement Becomes Honest

Style can open the door. But at some point, the body has to enter without hiding behind it.

For years I have learned through hip-hop, freestyle and popping foundations. These forms gave me discipline, musical understanding and a community. They gave me a language. But every language can also become a place to hide.

The question underneath technique

When I move, am I listening—or am I demonstrating what I already know? Am I meeting the music, the room and my actual emotional state, or am I repeating a version of myself that once received approval?

“Beyond style” does not mean rejecting foundations. It means letting the foundation become so deeply embodied that it can serve the present moment. Indian gesture, freestyle texture, theatre and stillness can meet without becoming a forced fusion when the intention underneath them is honest.

Presence is also practice

I want to create spaces where dancers can practise attention alongside technique. Where a pause can be as precise as a hit, and vulnerability can coexist with power. The goal is not to become styleless. It is to stop letting style decide in advance who we are allowed to be.
